In what must be a record child support demand, Mrs. Anne Dias Griffin has requested that an Illinois court award her a child support award of $1 million. Per month.
Mrs. Dias Griffin is married to billionaire Kenneth Griffin. Mr. Griffin is the founder of Citadel, LLC, a hedge fund company. According to Forbes, Mr. Griffin earned $1.1 billion dollars in 2014 and has a net worth of approximately $5.5 billion. The couple was married in 2003 and have three young children, all under the age of ten.
Mrs. Griffin claims that she is simply seeking to maintain the status quo of the marriage. So how does Ms. Dias Griffin get to $1 million per month? She needs $300,000 per month for use of a private jet, $160,000 for vacation accommodations and $14,000 per month for groceries, just to name a few expenses. The parties also utilize four nannies for their three children. Mr. Griffin’s attorneys argue that Ms. Dias Griffin is demanding such a large sum in order to fund her own lifestyle.
In the State of Illinois, the amount for child support will be a fixed dollar amount based on a certain percentage of the non-custodial parent’s net income. The percentage will depend on the number of children that the non-custodial parent will be supporting. New Jersey employs a much more complex mathematical calculation that takes into consideration not only the non-custodial parent’s income but also the income of the custodial parent. Of course, both states allow judges to deviate from their respective guidelines for cases involving wealthy parties, such as the Griffins.
